My twins are in kindergarten this year, and can I tell you they are LOVING it! I can see exactly why. They have a wonderful teacher (thank you, Mrs. Kohler), they do fun activities, they're learning to read, and they have great friends (their favorite part).
Just before Christmas break I volunteered in their classroom on bread making day. I love volunteering and helping out, but I have to say my motives for volunteering may have had to do more with my curiosity than anything else. How exactly does making bread with 20 plus kindergartners happen? I was ready to award Mrs. Kohler teacher of the year before even entering the classroom. Anyone who would attempt that deserves an award of some kind.
Their teacher had a lady from the Utah State University Extension program come and make the bread with the students. Everything went so smoothly! All the ingredients were put in a gallon bag, so there really was no mess. The students were paired up and took turns getting ingredients, and then holding the bag for each other to mix and mix and mix. It was so much fun to watch!
They were able to take their bread loaves home and then we baked them in the oven. I was shocked with how good the bread was! And it was made by kindergartners. I was sold! Great bread, hardly any mess- easy, easy!

You can find the recipe here. We made the 1/3 whole wheat flour bread, but you could try any of the other ones (I know I'm going to). I've made the bread two times since my boys made it in class. It's soft and delicious every time! Thanks Mrs. Kohler and the USU Extension program for the great idea!
Here's your Tuesday quote.
Oooh, I love homemade bread. I am definitely going to have to give this a try.

I teach cooking and baking in a summer enrichment program for 4-8th graders.....We have only an hour per class, so I have to make sure my recipes can be executed in that time frame. I've wanted to do something to introduce yeast, but few things fit my time constraint! But this looks very doable. Problem is, when I click on the link to see the recipe, no t hung happens! Help!!! Please! :)
ReplyDeleteThe link is a download, not an actual link to another site. Check your download folder. If that doesn't work, email me @ Marykay4unu@Comcast.net and I will send you the PDF. Have a great day!
DeleteSusan, I'm a retired Home Economics teacher. Try soft pretzels with your group. You can do them in an hour.
ReplyDeleteI just realized the recipe is on the same page, as is a recipe for bread sticks that are doable in an hour. Martha
DeleteI'm a 1st grade teacher. Did the students shape the bread, put it in loaf pans, and took them home on the BUS or car? Thanks
ReplyDeleteSorry I'm so slow getting back to you, Trish (I've been out of town). There were 6 parent helpers the day the bread was made. The parent helpers rolled the dough out for the kids, and then we helped them roll it into a loaf and put it in a disposable bread pan. They then took the bread (along with a printed copy of the recipe) home, and cooked it in the oven once they were home. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
DeleteI have tried several times to have the recipe download and I can't seem to get it to. Do you have a PDF file you could email or post?
ReplyDeleteI had someone from USU come to my home a few times after my daughter was born and we made some fun recipes. It's such a great program! I love this bread-in-a-bag idea so much.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately the link to the recipe doesn't work for me

The subsequent time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as a lot as this one. I imply, I do know it was my choice to learn, however I actually thought youd have something attention-grabbing to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could repair in the event you werent too busy in search of attention.
